Dry Hand Help

My hands get pretty dry in the winter. Last week my hands were red and dry between the fingers - and it hurt! I spent Monday looking for a lotion that would work after several attempts to make my hands feel better failed. I came across the Borage Therapy Hand Cream by Shikai for under $10. I tried it and within hours my hands were less red and less ouchy! This is a great cruelty free & vegan option if you have sensitive skin that is taking a winter time beating!

Tatchos!

Totchos! Yup that is right tater tots done up with nacho toppings! You have seasoned soy crumbles, cheezey sauce, salsa, sour 'cream' and jalapenos!

Cheezey sauce
1/2 a bag of Daiya Cheddar shreds
1/2 unsweetened almond/soy/rice milk
a dash of: garlic powder and chili powder blend

Place all of the ingredients in a small sauce pan, heat on medium and stir till everything is melty and bubbly! This is a thicker less watery cheeze sauce - you do not want to much liquid so the tots will not get soggy!

Saturday Shopping & More In Sacramento

We had a fun time up in Sacramento. The beauty class I spoke at had a great turn out - you can read about it over on Never Felt Better's blog. I got to finally check out the new location and do some shopping - the new location is great! Shout out to Vegan Flower - I saw someone looking at your dog treat book - I told her how awesome you are - she bought it!

Before the event we tried to do some shopping - everything was packed, we could not even get into the Arden mall. We headed to the K St. mall which was pretty empty as far as malls go. We got our Lush fix. My favorite product is the Snowcake soap...

As Matt and I where checking out - I picked up a hunk - sniffed it and then passed it to Matt - who said it smelled like Playdoh and so I had to get some!

I hope to go back to Sacramento soon and do some shopping and looking around! We have been so busy - our house proves it - we still do not have our tree up. At this point - I am like why bother!

Cats Toys & Litter

Mar's fave new cat toy comes from On A Whimm - a dear friend sent it to him. He loves playing with the tail and making it crinkle!

A few weeks ago we switched litters from an old standby that just was not working any longer to the clumping variety of Feline Pine. The second day he was using it it was being tracked everywhere - even on the bed and the pillows. Then I noticed I started having breathing problems and Mar started to dry heave - like he was coughing up hairballs but just pools of saliva. Also I went to cuddle with Mar - I did not know he just got out of the litter box but as soon as I sat him down I broke out in a horrible rash and my nose was dripping - I could not breathe.
We dumped the litter and are now using Word's Best Cat Litter - which has not tracked and has not made anyone sick! As soon as the other litter was out of the house my chest fog cleared up!

Winter Body Treats

When it gets cold out my scents change. I am usually a fruity girl but once it is cold I look for anything cocoa, cinnamon, spicy...yummy! These are my favorite cruelty free & vegan products right now. What are yours?

Giovanni body wash in Hazelnut Vanilla. The scent is not overbearing - it smells like a cup of tea. It lathers well too!
Dessert Essence hand and body lotion in Spicy Vanilla Chai is divine. If I could drink it - I would! It is super moisturizing and the scent lingers!

You Stink Soap solid perfume in Agave Cacao - smells like a mix of perfume with a bakery. A soothing romantic kitchen scent!

Moz In Oakland Was A No Go - Other News!

So last week my boyfriend and I headed to Oakland to see Morrissey. Before hand we checked out a few stores (I was looking for zines - Issues will carry The Easy Vegan starting this week!), had tea and sampled the best green juice smoothie at Crush and ate at Souley Vegan.

We ordered okra to split. I ordered the fried tofu, greens and biscuit and gravy. As well as a sakatini and piece of cheeze cake to split.

Matt ordered the spicy burger and potato salad on the side and had a Fat Tire later on.

This is our second time at Souley Vegan. We came hungry! I think we want to enjoy our food more but some things need improvement or maybe we are just picky. First off if you see the pic of Matt's side of potato salad - it is to tablespoon sized scoops - that is not really a side - is it? The spice level of Matt's food was non existent. The fried items lack flavor - the texture is great but unless you load it up with hot sauce (the table hot sauce is Frank's) the flavor is lacking. The dipping sauce is just vegan mayo - I think ranch would be better (I do not like mayo!
)On the plus side the greens were so yummy - lots of spicy taste going on that I would go back just to eat those! The biscuit was nice and fluffy too.

After dinner we found out the concert was cancelled - he did that last year...I was bummed but felt it coming. A fan gave us a bootleg copy of his return to the Hollywood bowl DVD which was great. The only thing open that was around was a bar have a HIV awareness night - we checked it out and headed home.

Sarah Kramer Wearing A Hair Bow By Me In Bust!

I was so happy to see Kat Dennings on the cover of the latest issue of Bust - I love 2 Broke Girls! I was flipping through the issue and came upon an ad on page 93 for Sarah Kramer's govegan.net and she is wearing one of my hair bows! I was so happy I called (well, screamed for Matt to come into the room!)...She is wearing this bow from my Etsy shop which she also sells at her store Sarah's Place if you are in Canada!

Craft Show Set Up

This was our table at the show over the weekend. Sorry for the dark photo - I had a minute to grab a photo before people came in. We both sold a lot of stuff however this year I was placed by another hair bow seller and the event advertised a seller selling bow ties so people kept thinking my hair bows were bow ties. I only sold a handful. 9 out of 10 people thought my hair bows were bow ties - I never had that before. I usually knit fingerless gloves for the event - however last year tons of people had gloves so I did not do that. Now everyone has hair bows (even past customers who now sell bows made like mine - wow really?)...

It was a great night to catch up with friends and drink locally crafted beer! Maybe next year no bows!

Peculiar & Strange

I am addicted to American Horror Story - I can't wait for a new show to pop up on my cable box. I savor the episodes - I even watch them twice at times. So far my faveorite has been episode 6 "Piggy Piggy" - it was well written, the plot line was great, I love the twist and there was something heart breaking about Tate's existence.
Many people might assume I am into a lot of horror - I am not. I like a good scary story line, real characters and thought provoking stuff. I am not a fan of the 80s slashers - I have never watched one all the way through. I think American Horror Story is scary but above all it has a story line. If more horror took shape like this I would be more into this genre.

I have had Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children on my list of 'to read' books for a few months - then my friend sent it to me and I dug right in. The photos are amazing - I really have this urge to go track down old photos now! I am on the last chapter of the book and I can't wait to see how it turns out. The story line fits perfect with the photos and the characters are amusing! Matt informed me that Tim Burton wants to make this into a movie. I would like for Tim Burton to stay away given his last handful of movies...I would hate to have one of the characters turn into a Johnny Depp pedophiliac atrocity.

Lip Balm Love (Vegan Style)

How many lip balms do you have in your bag right now? Me - well, currently I am packin' about 8! Crazy right? I rotate flavors on the hour! Here are my newest finds.

I picked this vegan balm by Eco Lips up after seeing it on an end cap at Sun Flower Market (my home away from home!). The flavor is not really strong but it is nice and the texture is really smooth. I think this would work for a guy with dry lips. I will use this as an excuse to keep it in my bag in case Matt's lips get chapped!

I have been wanting to try Hurraw! Balm for awhile, I recieved a free tube with an online makeup purchase and after trying it - I realize I need more! This is like butter for the lips, so smooth and the flavor/scent is subtle and not artificial in any way! The tint that comes with black cherry is really nice, sheer but it gives up a nice glossy tint!

I first heard of Lip Labz doing a vegan makeup search. I was really excited about getting a custom made vegan lip balm. I got my order the other day and am rather disappointed. First the balm/gloss came in a flimsy envelope with no padding, there was just a blank sheet of paper with the two products I ordered. The tubes looked nothing like the online picture, the label looked like an afterthought, the label was even wrong - stating non vegan ingredients (I tried it out - I can tell it is vegan). I picked watermelon lime for my flavor - thinking that would be awesome. I only taste watermelon - it is not a great taste. The gloss is OK but nothing I would buy again - cheap pigmentation. The balm was dry and crumb like and was not even shrink wrapped (I have made and sold lip balm in the past - it is not hard to shrink wrap them!)...Cool concept but it just did not work out.

We are getting better - I just need to get over this case of shingles I got on Sunday. There are a lot of updates to come!

[Vegan Mofo] Good Enough To Eat: E.L.F. Sets & DIY Room Scent

While out shopping last week I stumbled upon the E.L.F. kits for the holiday season for $5 and under. I know some of their makeup is not great but I also love some of their products (as you may know). I picked up the above set and have been trying all the glosses this week. My faveorite color is Miami (the second color) - which is more peach-gold-rose in person. Each color tastes and smells fruity and are pretty sheer. Also there is not gross stickiness to the glosses. These are good as is or over lipstick or even mixed with one another. $5 = bargain, try to find another vegan gloss, just one for that price!

Cinnamon Room Scent
--------------------------------------------------------------
a teaspoon of cinnamon (no need to get fancy - the cheap stuff is good)
about a cup of water

Mix the two ingredients in a small sauce pot and set over medium-low heat to simmer. It will make your whole house smell like a pie without any scary chemicals! I like doing this as I clean the house - I like things that smell good! Check on it every 30 minutes or so to make sure the water does not dry out and burn the cinnamon to the bottom of your pot!

[Vegan Mofo] A Special Pasta Dish

Today marks another year without my sister Jennifer. In 2003 at the age of twenty-two she was killed by a drunk driver. This is always a hard time for my family - this block of holidays ending with her birthday in January is something we get through with a cloud over us.

I wanted to think about my sister today and all the memories I had with her. One memory is some of her favorite dishes. Growing up she was crazy about pasta with butter and Parmesan, I was never a fan...I made the vegan version today...Simple no need for a recipe. Cook pasta till done, drain add Earth Balance, stir and sprinkle in a bunch of nutritional yeast...I could not get through my plate - even with Mar's help but it did take me back.

We miss you deeply sissy.

[Vegan Mofo] My Weakness For Sriracha

I am a huge Sriracha fan - I am constantly squirting way to much on my Thai takeout, adding it to nachos and pizza and mixing it in with bland store bought hummus to make it taste so much better! This is the stuff that would make cardboard taste good - I bet! I even have Matt reaching for it though he does not use as much as me!

Here is a recipe featuring Sriracha from Food Network that is easy and I bet you have most if not all the ingredients in your kitchen. It is very simple so feel free to add some diced pieces of Thai flavored tofu, cooked broccoli or sprouts...If you do not have soba noodles you can substitute whole wheat spaghetti. GF folks can use GF pasta.

Chilled Peanut Soba Noodles

  • Kosher salt
  • 8 ounces soba noodles
  • 1/4 cup natural crunchy peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup seasoned rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 2 to 3 teaspoons (or more if you are like me!) of Sriracha

Bring a large pot of water to a boil; overt high heat. Add a generous amount of salt and stir in the noodles. Cook according to package instructions; drain and rinse well under cold running water.

Meanwhile, whisk the peanut butter, soy sauce, vinegar and chili sauce in a large bowl until smooth. Add the drained noodles, and with tongs, toss until coated with the dressing. Serve immediately or chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours.

Note: If chilling noodles, toss with 1 to 2 tablespoons water to loosen them before serving.

[Vegan Mofo] WWPBD?

Don't feel like cooking? Rather watch talk shows and shop all day? Embarrassed of your family? Is big hair and lots of leopard print your thing?

Take a couch break with a carton of Almond Dream Bites! These vegan bonbons will have you feeling like Peggy Bundy in no time! I like eating them one at a time - letting the magic shell melt on my tongue! They have become a favorite around here!

[Vegan Mofo] Keepin' It Simple Weekend

We had a really relaxed weekend. Saturday Matt took the recyclables in and we headed over to the farmer's market and used the cash to score stuff from the Middle Eastern stand. We grabbed our usual - hummus (both spicy varieties), pita chips and I went for the Mediterranean couscous salad. I was a bit bummed about another trip to the market and no tofu salad but the couscous salad is so good - it was loaded with veggies and pitted cured olives. I lived on the container all weekend!
I am going back to get more of this couscous salad!

Matt and I searched for cruelty free - non leather gym shoes this week. At one store the staff (two guys) were puzzled about why we did not want leather. Guy 1 - 'said even if shoes say leather - it means synthetic' - I think not. Guy 2 was a jerk and started questioning Matt about his shoes - Matt was wearing his old Converse Chucks - made of canvas. I doubt we will go back to that store.

At Payless Matt bought me super cozy vegan furry shoes. I wanted them in black - but no stores in the area had my size in black so I went with grey and even got an additional $4 off!

I went to Hobby Lobby which is new to the town and bought some crafting supplies. However my favorite find is this giant plush lollipop I got at 40% off.

Sunday was a day of cleaning up, working out, Matt playing video games and a call from Trader Joe's. I found out I won a $25 gift card - I am so stoked to pick it up this week and buy food! I also enjoyed a hour or so with my mom and dad over a soy cappuccino and coming home and finishing off the couscous!

I hope your weekend was fun - even if it was relaxed like ours!

[Vegan Mofo] Time For Some More Tea

I think Numi's Chocolate Puerh is the number one tea around the house. Matt is a picky tea person but most mornings before he heads of to work I make him a cup of this with soy or almond milk and stevia. I like it a lot too - it is like hot chocolate but lighter (when you add soy milk & sweetener) and it is comforting. I plan on trying the vegan cookie recipe that comes on the box!
I picked The Republic of Tea's Vanilla Almond because I like almond and vanilla combined. When it is brewing it smells like almond shortbread - sweet and buttery. I serve it with soy milk and stevia but stevia on it's own tastes just as great. It makes me feel warm inside. It is a great after dinner tea served with some sugar cookies!

What tea are you drinking right now?

[Vegan Mofo] I Like It Hot

First up Chipotle Chicken Style rolled tacos from Starlite Cuisine. I picked these up last week because they looked good. I tried a few of the varieties before and liked them. Well, I really like these. The spicy 'chicken' is housed in a flour tortilla that bakes up crunchy. The kick is there - not to hot but nice. I love these served with guacamole and hot sauce!

I bought Merry Hempster's Hot Muscle Rub last night because - I have cramps and my lower back hurts. I have an appointment for a massage this weekend but my back is so sore and I feel like a big cry baby. So I had Matt rub this all over my lower back last night and really like it. It smells like yummy gum - minty and warm and the heat it brings is nice and soothing. I was tempted to rub it over my whole body last night...I think I might do that now!

[Vegan Mofo] KFC Inspired Meal

Last night dinner consisted of seitan cutlets based on this easy recipe, I made some modifications on spices and cooking time, red skin mashed potatoes and gravy and drop biscuits. I know with all the brown and white it is lacking color - but it is not lacking flavor! Mar begs for this seitan even!

[Vegan Mofo] The Easy Vegan Zine: Fall Edition

Over the weekend I printed the latest issue on The Easy Vegan - Fall Edition. I wanted to get it out sooner but you know how that goes! This issue is smaller than my last two - however each page is packed full of stuff. Lots of warm drink recipes and pumpkin recipes. Please check it out!

I am taking a zine break till the new year. These next few months are dedicated to craft shows that I am tabling at, making stuff for retail stores and holiday gift making/shopping! I would love to do a holiday zine but I think a holiday mental health break down would not be so great!
I do not know the theme for the next zine but I will keep everyone updated and if you have ideas, recipes or anything let me know!

[Vegan Mofo] A Box of Goodies

It all started with me searching for canned jack fruit...Kala from Vegancraftastic said she could get some and a swap was born! We have swapped before and I love swapping with people that come through (some people do not - those people suck!).

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Bettlejuice (or Carmine Carmine Carmine ;P)! My sister and I had this movie growing up on VHS - we watched it daily - it was missing from the collection. I was at Target (I go like two times a week) and bought a bunch of frames from their Halloween collection - however told myself to go back and buy this one so I could have money left in my account. Well, Kala must have read my shopping list mind! A super cool sugar skull ornament to add to my collection and a kitty cookie cutter to round out this grouping.

Food! Jack fruit, mochi, a cookie, Primal Strips and interesting black rice pasta. I am trying to think of a way to best utilize the black rice pasta! I saw black pasta a few weeks ago at the store but it contained squid ink - icky! This is completely natural and super rad!

Close up!!!!

Kala also sent me some zines - they are sitting on my side of the bed (at night I read before bed!). You need to check out her fall zine and get a copy!

Thank you again Kala! Swapping with you is a treat!

[Vegan Mofo] Keeping It Local: Sunflower Market

This week Sunflower Market opened in Modesto. We check it out yesterday, not expecting much. In the past other stores have let us down - offering little in the way of vegan products or not going with their name...

We were happy to see Sunflower Market has a lot in the way of vegan food and ingredients - the prices were way cheaper than a lot of stores in the area. They also had some hard to find vegan products. It is like a mini Whole Foods market. It was packed and I did not get to take many pictures - I started having a panic attack (crowds do that to me - plus the feeling of being overwhelmed & hungry). We bought some much needed ingredients for dinner and I discovered the coolest thing ever (well, one of the coolest things!):

At first I thought it was a honey station - I was like ick, but noticed they had two types of agave! I got a traditional honey bear full of agave! Sweet! I have never seen this before and was thrilled!

I am going back tomorrow and have coupons ready from the site. You can customize the coupons sent to you by diet type - they have vegetarian and vegan! Yay!

[Vegan Mofo] Speaking of Soda + A Crafty Project

Here is the deal - when I was 15 (almost 16 - the week of my birthday) I was hospitalized for like four days - they wanted to keep me more I wanted to get out for my birthday. I had a really bad case of pneumonia - and spent those days in the hospital out of it...
During my sickness and recovery I developed a dislike of soda. We were a soda family - not that we drank a lot of soda we just always had it around. I could not drink soda and did not like any form of soda until recently. I started drinking a few natural root beer brands - but did not like them - plus some of them even contained chemical sweeteners - ick! I discovered Zevia - they even have a vegan logo on the side and was hooked with my first grape soda. I think I have tried every flavor and my favorite has to be grape and then black cherry. I only drink one a day or every other day, a six pack costs me $4.99 and I don't want to go in debt over soda (add this to my Star Bucks addiction and I might have to start selling things off to get more drinks!)...
I know a lot of people are not crazy about the 0 calorie sweetener that comes from a leaf - I find the taste of it in the soda not offensive. I have had it in other drinks and I gag but I think the carbonation mellows it out. I don't think these sodas could replace a hard core soda drinkers daily habit but the flavors are really top notch and worth a try!

Here is a crafty project that uses recycled materials. These are jazzed up recipe cards - you can use them to pass on recipes or hole punch the corners and tie them with ribbon and make a lil recipe book! I am using loteria boards - feel free to use interesting food packaging (anything light cardboard will work - think cereal box weight).

Step 1
: Cut your cardboard into pices that are like 4 1/2" by 3 1/2".

Step 2: Do this with printer paper to (I only had white - feel free to use colored paper!). Write down your recipes on this paper.

Step 3: Use a glue stick to glue your recipe onto the ugly (not the decorative side) of the cardboard. To get everything to stick - place the cards between books or under something flat and heavy for a few hours so the glue bonds the paper.

Finished product: You can take these a step further if you print out your recipes or you can glitter them up if that is your thing. I just have a load of sharpies that I like to get crazy with!

[Vegan Mofo] Good Enough To Eat - Crazy Rumors Lip Balm & DIY Lip Scrub

Ever since I was little I remember loving lip balms and glosses. From the tins that slide open to getting the sticky sweet roller ball variety that was to glossy for elementary school! Commercial based lip balm is far from vegan friendly often loaded with beeswax and lanolin, not to mention a host of other crappy things you do not want to have near your mouth.

Enter Crazy Rumors - vegan lip balm that comes in a ton of flavors. I have scooped a handful up over the last few months and like some kind of lip balm hoarder I keep them all in my purse. Maybe I need lip balm rehab!

I bought the soda pop collection because it was on sale and I got it for like $3! I go to this collection a lot - my favorites are the root beer and cola - both have a really classic flavor that makes you want to apply more. They are so good you may just feel like your lips are carbonated!

DIY Lip Scrub
1/8 teaspoon of brown sugar or sugar in the raw
1/4 teaspoon of olive oil
mixing bowl - spoon

Mix the two ingredients together. Apply to clean (non glossed lips) in a circular motion. Wipe off the sugar mix and follow up with your fave lip balm! Easy and I bet you have the ingredients on hand right now?

[Vegan Mofo] Buffalo Tempeh Fingers

I am not a huge fan of tempeh - I find it OK as a bacon substitute in sandwiches but for the most part the texture is just funky. I was looking for a easy dinner with an alternate protein source for dinner and came up with this easy recipe!

Buffalo Tempeh Fingers
1 package of tempeh cut into strips (fingers)
2 tablespoons of Earth Balance
1/4 of a cup of hot sauce (I mixed Frank's RedHot & Sriracha)
a bit of oil for frying
vegan ranch and sweet potato fries (optional)

Fry tempeh strips in oil (medium heat) till each side is browned - do not burn them. While they brown up combine EB and hot sauce together in a saucepan - cook till EB is melted - stir. Lower temperature and poor hot sauce mix over tempeh - coating it, let it cook this way for 5 minutes. Then turn the heat up and let it cook for a minute or two to get the sauce to really stick. Serve it with vegan ranch and sweet potato fries - like I did or in a sandwich!

[Vegan Mofo] Weekend Adeventures

I was not expecting to go back up to the mountains so soon, however Matt's work had a group day up at Black Oak Casino and I decided to play stowaway in hopes of a great meal.

This was my first time at a casino and I was smitten with all the lights and fun machines. I picked out anything cat related and go sucked in. Matt pulled me away so we could go eat.

Through the winding roads (battling car sickness) we headed to Murphy's again and had lunch at Mineral - both of us had the burgers and peanut butter truffles! Bought more tea at Tea an' Tiques, did some wine tasting at Black Sheep Vintners (the sparkling wine was so tasty - I am kicking myself for not buying a bottle - next time for sure!). Then drove through the mountains and on our way home.

Saturday we planned on going shopping and going out to eat an hour away but after the mountain roads, Matt's car acting up and just wanting to stay around we decided to keep it in town with a movie and shopping.

I decided to try and recreate a dish Matt was planning on having. It is barbequed seitan over mashed potatoes. This is really easy and you could get more hands on - using homemade seitan (I cannot find wheat gluten here!). I also used boxed mashed potatoes - another short cut!

2 packages of seitan chunks
1/2 spicy sweet BBQ sauce
a bit of olive oil
prepared mashed potatoes

Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat, add seitan chunks, fry for a few minutes, tossing to brown each side. Add BBQ sauce, reduce the heat to a medium low setting and cook till the sauce becomes bubbly. Plate the mashed potatoes creating a bowl shape and scoop in seitan - serve and say yummy (and easy!)...
